Fan of baseball? How about beer? We have just the place for you. Left Field Brewery is located in east Toronto in the Leslieville neighbourhood. It opened in 2013 and brews a series of baseball-inspired, distinct and full-flavoured beers. It was founded by husband and wife team Mark and Mandie Murphy who seem to have a bit of a passion for both beer and baseball. We were happy to pay the brewery a visit as we also share an interest in these things.
The extremely friendly and relaxed vibe was exactly what we were looking for on a Saturday afternoon. As per their website, they focus on what they do best: the beer, so there isn’t an extensive food menu but you are welcome to bring in your own food or have something ordered in. You feel right in the heart of the brewing magic, sitting amongst the brewing tanks. Their tap room seating is fully accessible Friday to Sunday when they have their picnic tables that sit at 31” high out on the production floor (with moveable benches). But on the weekdays there is only high top seating.
The brewery is located at 36 Wagstaff Drive, a tucked away side street off of Greenwood Avenue. If travelling by transit, the 506 Gerrard streetcar will get you within a couple short blocks of the venue. There is also limited street parking and a narrow sidewalk on Wagstaff leading up to Left Field, but was manageable with my wheelchair. The front door has two steps to enter, but there is a second entrance to the right of the main door that has no threshold, however no automatic door opener. It is 31” wide. Upon entering, you will notice the spacious facility that allows for parking of mobility devices if required. You may also notice the ‘sporty’ décor that goes right along with all their aptly named beer flavours. Flooring is smooth concrete making it easy to navigate around.
They have a large private washroom down a wide hallway. The door is 35.5” wide with a manual, lever handle. Inside, the toilet has grab bars behind and beside it, the floating sink is 31” high and 20” wide. The toilet, sink, soap dispenser and paper towel are all manual, not automatic.
The brewery is a family-friendly and dog-friendly. The Tap Room and Bottle Shop are open daily from 11am to 9pm. If you are looking for a bit of beer education, brewery tours run every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm. We left after some delicious sample flights, a 6 pack to-go and even a cap embroidered with the brewery’s namesake. Needless to say, we’ve become fans.
