Traveling out of my normal downtown Toronto bubble, it’s easy to say what drew me to the Relish Bar and Grill on a cold December night after work: Craft beer, tapas, and live music 7 nights a week. Yes – 7 nights a week. That is what the Relish Bar and Grill prides itself on, and when building the space they built with accessibility in mind.
Walking up to the venue, a curb cut and paved ramp leads you up to the 34-inch wide door. Once entering the venue, the stage is immediately to your right with one step up to the stage. Moveable chairs and tables (28 inches high) line the left hand side of the venue, the high bar with stools to your right. The tables have a centre bar for support which may require some clever positioning for anybody with a single continuous footplate. Lighting is low and there are no automatic features. Not a large venue, the emergency exit is clearly marked where you enter the venue.
Moving towards the back of the venue, the tiled floor ramps slightly as you make your way to the accessible bathroom. The bathroom door measures 40” wide, swinging inwards, with adequate turning space once inside. Two grab bars are located inside the washroom, one vertical in front of the toilet, and one horizontal above the toilet. The sink height measures 32 inches with space for clearance underneath, however there was a garbage can beneath the sink obscuring some of the clearance on my visit. The soap dispenser is within functional reaching limits, the paper towel dispenser slightly high if the paper towel is not hanging down.
If driving to the venue, there are two Green P’s close by with one directly behind Relish Bar and Grill located at 101 Cedarvale Avenue. The closest accessible subway station is Main Street station which is about 10-minutes away from the venue.
