After attending an east end Jane’s Walk I found myself enjoying a cup of coffee at The Social Gardener Cafe. Beyond serving excellent coffee, the cafe is a social enterprise project of the Riverdale Hub, and is designed to provide opportunities for training and skill-building for marginalized women in the Riverdale/Gerrard East community.
There is ample street parking available on Gerrard, alternatively, if taking transit the closest accessible subway station is Coxwell. From Coxwell station, you can catch the 22 bus which travels North/South to Coxwell and Eastwood. From the bus stop the cafe is 600m east.
The entrance has no steps, and the cafe is accessed through a door measuring 35-inches with a 1/4" lip transition and an automatic door opener. Once inside, there are 25-inch tall tables with moveable chairs. Additionally, at the front window there is bar style seating measuring 41-inches tall. The cafe has wood flooring throughout, and a 36-inch wide ramp leading to a raised section of the room.
The private, accessible washroom has a 33-inch wide door that swings inwards. The washroom is 82-inches by 82-inches. A horizontal grab bar is located behind the toilet, and an angled grab bar is just beside the toilet. The sink is 28-inches high with clearance space underneath. Soap and paper dispensers can be reached on either side of the sink. There are no automatic features at this venue.
Besides coffee, they serve delicious vegan and vegatarian food all made in house (and they even grow some of the ingredients on their roof!). Also, the space’s unique design has been featured on the popular lifestyle show Steven and Chris!
