You don’t need a sound understanding of cockpit controls, or even an idea of aeronautics to enjoy an evening out at The Aviator. Conveniently located 350 meters from the fully accessible Coxwell Station, The Aviator has landed on East Danforth complete with accessible parking spaces, and a well-maintained front entrance that is bright and fully automated.
Owner Verity Crewe-Nelson put accessibility and function at the forefront when designing her space. After her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, it was difficult for her family to find accessible eateries, sharing “I wanted to create a space where my dad could have enjoyed himself.” Verity spoke about the importance of serving her community and the word is out locally, “Just last week we had four diners using mobility devices!”
Verity has appreciated and adopted a lot of the feedback she’s received from her customers regarding accessibility. For example, she’s looking into heavier flat wear after a customer with Multiple Sclerosis suggested it made dining easier. Aviator staff have also employed a “mocktail” section, for those who’d like to enjoy a cocktail, but are on medication that can’t mix with alcohol.
On the exterior, maintaining the sidewalks in the winter is a priority for Crewe-Nelson to keep the entrance unobstructed. Her staff ensure none of her patrons have to struggle with snowbanks if they are parking out front. The front of the restaurant has a large window to let natural light in, however there are blinds to help control for both light and temperature. The front door is 34 inches wide and can be opened by an automatic button.
The interior of the venue has generous open space wide enough to accommodate a mobility device. There are hooks available to the right of the bar to hang a cane if needed. The tables are standard height and can be rearranged to accommodate as the staff are happy to make changes to the space if needed. The flooring is a natural, herringbone design, with some weather rugs to allow for the inevitable Toronto slush. The printed materials are clear and readable. The pathway to the back of the restaurant is unobstructed as is the hallway to the washroom.
The washroom is located on the right of an unobstructed hallway, past the kitchen. It is a single bathroom, gender-neutral, fully automated space. The light is bright with unobstructed space to turn a mobility device. There are two grab bars surrounding the toilet and a change table on the opposite wall and the sink has clear, open space in front and underneath.
You’re in for a safe landing with The Aviator. Open for evening meals and for brunch on the weekends, the space is warm, accessible and accommodating. Whether its cocktails, mocktails or a good meal, The Aviator will take you where you want to go.
