Elvy & Flo Cafe
713 Gerrard St E, Toronto, ON M4M 1Y5
Along the edge of East Chinatown is located Elvy & Flo, a café that is committed to giving back to the community. Their menu and business structure pay homage to both the owners’ grandmothers, Elvy and Flo. Everything on the menu is thought out to support sustainability, inclusivity and living healthier lifestyles.
Their main motto is to re-use and salvage whenever possible by providing water from a tap at the back of the cafe instead of selling bottled water, and sourcing from the produce grown at Eastdale CI’s rooftop garden or local markets.
Of the two entrances, the side which measures 35” wide is fully accessible with an automatic door opener. One thing to be mindful of this entrance is that there is a bench and side table along the wall that provides additional seating, shortening the walkway to about 32” wide. The bench and side table are easily moved, however, if needed as staff are happy to accommodate. Just past the side door you will find their patio but it is closed in the winter.
Inside, the café is rustic yet modern, warm and cozy. When you enter, there is carpeted flooring but the rest is wood flooring that is textured to avoid slipping. Walkways are clear and measures about 42” wide in the middle, and 30” wide in the back and front where the majority of the seating can be found. There is a mixture of high tables and regular tables. The regular tables measure 30” high with chairs that can be easily moved to make more room when needed.
The washroom is located in the walkway towards the back seating area. There are two washrooms, the accessible washroom is the one to the right. The entrance measures 34” wide with a lever handle to enter. Inside by the toilet are two grab bars that measure 29” (back) and 38” (side) high from the ground. The sink is 33” high and 22” wide with all the necessities of soap and paper dispenser nearby. There is a change table 39” high with no clearance below.
Elvy & Flo is accessible by car with Green P street parking a few feet away from the café entrance. It is also accessible from the 504 King Streetcar and 72 Pape Bus—the two closest subway stations are Broadview and Pape.
